What causes a cold sore? This is a very common question people have who are experiencing their first outbreak and are unsure of how they became infected with the simplex 1 virus. The way that you get the herpes simplex virus is through skin to skin contact with an infected person. So, if you kiss a person who has a outbreak on their lip or mouth, you will get the virus. This virus is VERY contagious and only takes one time and one touch to get it into your body. Make sure to be careful if you see a red bump on ones lip and you want to kiss them, it may be the cold sore virus and not a pimple!
